" ... She wanted to be like the other boys. Following the boys down the road, along the creek, she grasped at bugs and tadpoles in the trickling water. The neighborhood boys teased and taunted the little girl. “You're just a sissy! You're just a cry baby!” The words stung, and she held back tears that fiercely protested behind her eyelids.
They threw rocks and dirt at the little girl and ran ahead of her. “I'm just as brave as you are!” She shouted, wiping dirt from her face. She stumbled in the gravel and scraped her knees. She briskly returned to her feet and ran after them. This particular afternoon, the group followed the creek all the way to a meadow shadowed by a great oak tree.
Running to lose the little girl, the boys scrambled up a makeshift ladder nailed to the side of the tree. High above she saw a treehouse. She wasn't afraid of climbing. She loved to climb trees! Struggling to keep up with them, she was the last to reach the great oak. The ladder was tall, and she got a little nervous, but she did not want them to see her fear. Swallowing hard, and holding her breath, she proceeded to climb the ladder to the clubhouse in the tree."
